Statement from the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Supporting the Introduction of the Recovering America's Wildlife Act in the Senate

The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies strongly supports the introduction of the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (S.1149) in the U.S. Senate today. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) introduced this bipartisan legislation that would provide critical funding to state fish and wildlife agencies and tribal fish and wildlife managers to effectively conserve our nation’s fish and wildlife for future generations. If passed, this bill will not only help the one-third of wildlife species in the United States currently at risk of becoming threatened or endangered, but also save taxpayer money by implementing proactive solutions to conserve those species in greatest need and prevent wildlife from becoming threatened or endangered.

The Association Applauds the New Partnership of the Native American Fish & Wildlife Society and IHEA-World

The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies is excited to see the Native American Fish & Wildlife Society (NAFWS) partner with the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA), allowing Native American tribes to become certified to teach Hunter Education. This announcement was made last week during the North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in St. Louis, MO.

The Association Commends the Distribution of Over $39.2 Million in Funding for Fish Habitat Conservation Projects in 24 States

The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies is pleased to see the National Fish Habitat Partnership program assist in providing more than $39.2 million to support 95 fish habitat conservation projects in 24 states. Collaborative partnerships between the state fish and wildlife agencies, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Tribes nongovernmental organizations, and other partners are key to implementing these conservation priority projects.

Recovering America’s Wildlife Act Left Out of 2023 Omnibus Package

The Association was disappointed to learn that in the final hours of negotiation, the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act was not included in the final language of the year end 2023 Omnibus package. The impasse had little to do with the contents of the legislative bill, which is widely supported, but the clock just ran out.

The Association Applauds Conservation Funded by America the Beautiful Challenge

The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (Association) applauds the Biden-Harris Administration (Administration) for awarding more than $90 million in grant funding for conservation and restoration projects through the America the Beautiful Challenge (Challenge). Last week, the Administration announced that 55 new grants across 42 states, 3 U.S. territories, and 14 Tribal Nations have been selected for locally led ecosystem restoration projects under the public-private grant program.

New State of the Birds Report Reveals Widespread Losses of Birds in All Habitats–Except for One

Today, the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) published the State of the Birds 2022 Report, highlighting two important trends and revealing an important message. The report reveals that birds are declining overall in every habitat except in wetlands, where decades of investment have resulted in dramatic gains. Comebacks of waterfowl show the power of dedicated conservation funding and policy investments. Passage of proactive conservation legislation, such as the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, is essential to reverse this trend and bring birds back.

AFWA Recommends 55 Priority Projects for the 2023 Multistate Conservation Grant Cycle

During the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies’ 112 th Annual Meeting, held September 18-21, the members recommended the approval of 55 projects to be funded through the Multistate Conservation Grant Program (MSCGP). All proposals responded to the Association’s strategic conservation priorities and were reviewed by subject matter experts from the Association’s Committees.
