North American Bird Conservation Initiative Committee
Started in 1999, the U.S. North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) Committee (Committee) is a coalition of government agencies, private organizations, and bird initiatives in the United States dedicated to securing the long-term health of native bird populations. Specifically, the Committee is working to:
- • Enhance coordination of existing conservation programs and bird initiatives including the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Partners In Flight, North American Waterbird Conservation Plan, U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan, and regional planning efforts for resident game birds such as bobwhite quail and grouse;
- • Help partners meet their common bird conservation objectives by ensuring that organizations have the capacity to support and deliver integrated bird conservation, which is based on sound science and cost-effective management; and
- • Foster increased cooperation and collaboration through partnerships at all levels that span geographic, taxonomic, and socio-cultural divides.
To realize NABCI’s ambitious goal, the Committee defined three-to-five year visions for critical components of bird conservation. Based on those, the Committee chose four priorities to focus its annual work plans. They include:
- Advancing coordinated bird monitoring,
- Advancing the science of conservation design,
- Increasing institutional support for bird conservation within state and federal agencies,
- Enhancing the conservation of birds on private lands, and
- Promoting international conservation.
