All-Bird Conservation

State and provincial fish and wildlife agencies have a leading role in the conservation of North America's birds. Since the early 1900s, the states have managed programs to protect and enhance populations of waterfowl and upland game birds and the habitats upon which they depend. In recent years, the agencies have broadened their efforts to include conservation projects that benefit songbirds, shorebirds, raptors, and other taxonomic groups.

Working through bird conservation partnerships and the the Association, state and provincial agencies advocate an "all-bird" approach to conservation. All-bird conservation demands an unprecedented level of communication and coordination among state and federal wildlife agencies, nongovernmental organizations, joint venture partnerships, bird conservation initiatives, and others working to protect and restore bird populations. The staff at the Association supports and facilitates the communication and coordination among States and their partners.

The All-Bird Coordinator supports state fish and wildlife agencies in the development and implementation of state-level bird conservation programs. Through workshops, meetings, and technical assistance, the Association staff provides support to the state agencies as they plan, prioritize, and implement bird conservation actions identified in the State Wildlife Action Plans, Partners in Flight North American Landbird Conservation Plan, the U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan, the North American Waterbird Conservation Plan, North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Northern Bobwhite Conservation Initiative, Woodcock initiative, and other emerging resident game bird initiatives.
