Invasive Species Committee
Committee Description
Invasive plants and animals are among the greatest challenges to wildlife and fisheries management in the 21st century. More than 20 states have formed invasive species committees to address this threat. As state and federal land, water and wildlife management agencies commit millions of dollars to fighting invasive species challenges, strategic coordination among state and federal agencies became critical to the conservation and expansion of existing wildlife and fisheries habitat. The Association established its Invasive Species Committee in 2005 to meet these challenges.
The Invasive Species Committee, formed by merger of the Aquatic Nuisance Species Working Group and the Invasive Species Advisory Working Group, provides a national forum for coordinated action among state and federal agencies, and provides a foundation for development of a strategic AFWA invasive species plan.
The Association continues to work on its strategic positions on the invasive species issue, striving to prioritize invasive species threats and suggest framework for cooperation among state and federal agencies and other partners to engage the invasive species challenge.
